Christopher was born and bred in Derbyshire. He studied geography at Merton College Oxford. He came to teach at Marlborough College in 1974, and has lived in the Marlborough area ever since, moving to West Overton in 1991. While in Marlborough he was a town councillor and chairman of planning for six years in the early 1980s. He sings in a variety of choirs within the region, and is a volunteer guide at Salisbury Cathedral.
